Also, in response to your comment about F*** the customer, I agree. In my line of work, my number one priority is personal safety. I'm not about to put myself in danger just to prevent a store from getting broken into at night. I'm paid to notice it and report it to the police. I think companies should be going back to their roots so to speak and consider the employee as the most vital part of their business. True, without a customer, there would be no one to sell their product to. However, without an employee, there would be no one to sell the service to the customer. Kind of sounds like a catch 22, doesn't it?

I do see where you're coming from Trixy. People need to realize that the honor system doesn't work simply because there is no honor among thieves. Reason why I say this is because the honor system is still in use at these self serve gas stations. Pre-paying would definately cut the percentage of gas n dashes, if not erase them entirely.

I don't really have an issue with working alone, I just hate the fact that people don't have to pay before taking the gas.  You don't allow a person at a grocery store to take the food to their car before paying, so why let someone put fuel in their vehicle without paying for it first?

My manager was pushing head office to allow us to put in place a pre-pay only after 6pm rule because of a surge in gas-n-dashes recently (which is continuing because of the high fuel prices), but they eventually refused, saying it was not "customer friendly".

I do not want to be rude, but F*** the customer.  What about my safety, the well-being of my boss's financial position, etc?  Are the employees really less valuable than the customers?  Is an employee's safety really less important than being "friendly"?  I have talked to customers, and 99.99% of the time, they are all for making it pre-pay.  Some are blown away that after dark, when we are left alone (as we only have female cashiers), that people don't have to pay first.

I don't agree with putting people alone at self serve stations. Also, the oil companies used to take the money for gas and dashes out of the employee's salaray until that guy got killed in Burnaby after being dragged for about a kilometer. The full service only law in Coquitlam not only makes it safer, by forcing them to have more than one employee on at a time, it also creates more jobs. I hope the other cities in the GVRD follow Coquitlam and make this a law.

I so desperately wish that we were allowed to make people pre-pay or pay at the pump before buying there gas at the station where I work.  It is so stressful, having to write down every plate number and the discription of every vehicle, watching people like a hawk lest they flee without paying for their fuel.  Case in point, this past Thursday I had two gas drive aways (the combined total was $101.00) and because of how effing busy it was and the fact that I was all alone, I didn't get either plate number in time and therefore those bastards got away with it.

Typical marketing strategy. When you posted minimum purchase, I thought it was something like you had to buy X amount of stuff from the gas station to get the rebate. I did hear of oil companies complaining that with the Coquitlam law that there are only full serve gas stations, they were losing money because no one is going into the store to buy candy and chips and pop and stuff. First of all, relying on impulse purchases to make money? Yeah, that's a smart business strategy. Second, oil companies are now only making $5 million dollars instead of $50 million? They'll get no sympathy out of the working class. Maybe if they charged a reasonable amount of money for gasoline, people would have money left to buy candy, chips and pop from their store.
