* BC - Gothic Retail Stores *

Valerian's picture

A list of the most popular vendors in BC for all sorts of Gothy goodies. Although the BC scene is primarily focussed in Vancouver, we'd like to list cool shops from all over the province. Just a note: there are many shops in the province that sell a *few* Gothy things, but this is a list of places where the majority of the stock would be of interest to Goths. If you know of any, please post about them! If you see a broken link, error, or want me to add anything please reply to this and I will make the change.

Submitted by Valerian on June 29, 2007 - 8:26pm.

Velorium: Most of the Vancouver stuff on the list is walkable since it's mostly downtown, or do-able by a very short bus trip. There's only two shops (I think) in New West, but that's about a 35 minute drive (or SkyTrain trip) from downtown Vancouver. Venus & Mars should still be there, I think they just forgot to renew their domain (or else they are in the midst of changing it). They haven't closed or anything as far as I know. Sativa/Labyrinth Gothic is in New West, as well.

Darksyde: added!

Well, the best and quickest ways I know to advertise (for free) is to always put a descriptive link and/or image in your forum signatures no matter where you post (which it looks like you're already doing)... other than that, start a store blog on a site which is RSS feed-capable (example: LiveJournal, search engines pick those up), create a free MySpace page, submit your site to as many search engines as possible, and join a few web rings. :)

This list with stores is really helpfull, thank you. =)

Im searching for stores of clothes, boots, anything, near New Westminster, at least according to my travel agency thats where I'm going to live for 3 weeks. Of course I will travel around Vancouver but I guess it would be easier to go to the stores near where I'll stay. ^^

I tried Google and I found 'Venus and Mars' but the website Google gave me didnt work. -_-

Ive never been to Canada so I have no idea how far or how close the places are. :/

I'm in search of some cheaper skirts and dresses/corsettes in the style of what they have at Millenium (Metrotown) but without the huge pricetag (hot skirt, but $104 for barely any fabric, sheesh). Does anyone know of anything in Vancouver or near there that would have what i'm looking for?

Oh... you mean, their shop is (physically) gone?

Wow, that was quick. Mind you that whole strip of Granville street is becoming a huge flop. If they have actually vanished let me know and I'll remove the listing ASAP.

Submitted by Khallayne (not verified) on September 13, 2006 - 1:53am.

Okay, so I went to Millenium again recently, and someone said they don't have furniture...Yes, indeed they do. I'm surprised nobody's corrected this yet. The cabinets that they hold their bongs and some of their dragons and such in ARE for sale, by order, they're just super expensive (Isn't everything? ::) ). Also, they have one or two glass-top tables with dragons for bases. This isn't actually what I wanted to post about though, it was about a specific shirt that I saw there (Less than a week ago, so around Sept. 9th). It was a double layer of thin material, cotton maybe? It was black, and if you turned it inside out, it was black and..grey..?...stripes, and the neck was like a turtleneck, only seriously baggy, almost like an all around hood. Not sure if anyone's seen it or not, but it was horribly overpriced ($70 for that? :-/ No thanks). So I was wondering if anyone's seen any shirts/sweaters like that, with the huge turtleneck. Thanks ;)

PS - It was a Vexy shirt, just in case anyone was wondering. Loved it.

Submitted by Valerian on August 20, 2006 - 11:11am.

I did a google search and found Millennium's phone number rather easily: 604-451-7500

But then that was before I realized that I've had their phone & address in the list the whole time, but under Decor & Gifts. LOL! Not surprising, they used to only sell giftware & stuff. I think the clothing is a pretty recent addition (within the last 2 years).

Organized Kaos is not on the list because um... no one has ever recommended it (this is actually the first I've heard of it - are they new?). I just Googled them & got their MySpace page. It is such a pain to look at that I'm not going to link it, but I'll add the store to the list because it does look like they have some pretty neat stuff. :P

Not sure if Organized Kaos is on the retail stores list - they're on Granville, sorta near the Rock Shop. Pretty good stuff - lots of Flaming Angels gear.

Well I can't find Millennium in the phonebook, or find their number on the internet. They're not even on the Metrotown website. I was hoping someone would know (or at least know their number?) before I bus out there for nothing. I am totally guilty of not phoning Scalie. I'll give them a call about the boots I want.

Depends what you want. I found most prices to be between $50-$120 at Scalie, but I haven't been there lately. If you have something pretty specific in mind I'd suggest calling them both and asking. I'm sure you'll get a quicker answer that way anyway. (why is it no one calls anyone anymore?)

What's the price range of the shoes at Millenium and at Scalie Shoes? I'm interested in checking them out but I just can't afford paying $150+ for a new pair of boots like they charge at Fluevog.

Thanks! - added Millennium. I don't get out of downtown much so if there's anything else I should be listing, speak up, folks! Remember, stock must be primarily Goth-friendly.

I came across a new store recently - it's on Granville (1028? I think) and sells inexpensive gothy-type stuff. Not the highest-end quality, but you can get a pair of studded PVC-ish pants for under $30, which is cool. Lots of corsetty-bustier type tops too, and some leather. Also a wide selection of fishnet shirts, bodysuits, etc etc. Basically this is the place to go if SinCity is in 5 hours and you have nothing to wear. Worth checking out. It's called Dare to Wear. Their site seems to be down but if I recall correctly it was (under construction) at www.dare-to-wear.com.

There's a hosiery shop in Royal Centre Mall (Burrard & Georgia) that sells some, I know that for sure. Otherwise try The Bay downtown - they have a pretty big selection of tights and socks, and may have some. Le Chateau may have a small selection, if there's one near you maybe try them too.

Socks are a pretty small and inexpensive item, so a lot of online stores won't list them.

Millenium sells incense burners, pipes, bongs, a lot of new age statues likes dragons, gargoyles and wizards. They also sell attitude t-shirts with Spongebob, Simpsons, Family Guy, Trailer Park Boys characters. As for gothic jewellery and other stuff, I bought a nice anhk there not too long ago. They have celtic jewellery, mainly necklaces and rings. I didn't see any wrist bands or anklets or bellychains or anything like that. No gothic clothing or furniture either. If you're looking for gothic jewellery, Spencers Gifts has a much bigger selection.

Regarding the "Millennium" store inside Metrotown - could someone who's in the area take a good look in there for me, and let me know what kind of things they sell? I have only been in there once, and all I recall was swords. I'd like to add them to the list, but not if that's the only thing remotely Gothy they have. I'd like to know if they have jewelry that might appeal to our crowd, or knick-knacks, furniture, clothing, etc.

Just a hunch since I haven't seen the store yet, but that would explain why it is called "Jaywalk" (i.e. J-Rock).

Intuitive, haha. I just thought that it was trying to sound 'rebellious', because jaywalking is so incredibly hard-core, you know. ;)

I noticed a newish store in Granville called 'Jaywalk Clothing'. It wasn't incredibly gothy but they had a lot of things that /could/ be gothy with some work. Most of it was just brightly coloured and reminded me a bit of like Japanese-type fashion.

There's a place next door to the Kripps pharmacy (Granville at Nelson in Vancouver) that sells "alternative" clothing and accessories, as well as a decent stock of body jewellery. It's called Adrenaline.

The store in Metrotown Mallthat everyone is thinking of is probably Millenium. It's near the theatre entrance. You can't miss it with all the dragons and swords in the window. Dragonspace has cool stuff too.

However, if you're looking for the finger-armor style rings, you won't find them at either location. I was shopping around for those as well just a few months ago, and couldn't find any. My honest suggestion is, IF that's what you're looking for, shop around online, especially on e-bay. The trick is to find out your ring size at a jewellery store, and go from there. Most auctions on e-bay will list a size range ie "fits sizes 10-12". From experience, the ring is more likely to be close to the larger end of that range. (ie closer to 12).

A *moderate* selection of such things can be found in the Granville Island market in the Dragonspace store. It's adequate. It seems to me that there's a store in Metropolis in the Metrotown mall as well. Sorry in both cases, addresses unknown due to the fact that these places are landmarks to me anyway.

Submitted by Valerian on February 4, 2005 - 10:01am.

It's much more comfortable to have some kind of "quick exit" from a corset, for the odd unforseen circumstance when you might have to get it off quickly by yourself (hyperventilation, a heated moment with a passionate partner, etc.) - so some sort of front mechanism is a good idea. They sell hook & eye tape cut to length there, so think about going for that. It's not terribly strong so you won't be able to cinch super-tightly, but it will do the job with the minimum of sewing. All the notions are in the basement. Of course, if this is for SinCity, you'll have some fun shopping upstairs for wigs and costume accessories too!

I'm in the middle of making a new corset myself. I doubt it will be done in time though. I have a lot of other proects on the go at the same time! But you never know...

Marvelous! Thanks so much for the additional resources. I don't think for this corset that I will order a busk; I'll just have to make do with what I can scrounge up (Valentine's Sin City is fast approaching!) so I may go sans busk on this one. I'm a pattern-free kinda gal, so I wouldn't want to expend a lot of money without any guarantee of success, anyhow. I have yet to get to Dressew (*insert sharp intake of breath*) which I have heard is a must see. What with statistics homework and all there's little time to get downtown. Thanks again for the help.

Your best bet is to order a steel busk from <a
Submitted by Valerian on January 30, 2005 - 3:06pm.

Your best bet is to order a steel busk from Farthingale's in Toronto. I have yet to find a store here that has any in stock, although they might order one in for you. That being said, Farthingale's is most likely where they will order it in from, so save yourself a few bucks & order direct. Dressew has quite a bit of corset-making supplies - spiral steel boning & flat steel boning in a wide array of lengths (as well as all the plactic boning you can handle, plus lingerie hook & eye closures for the front if you don't want a steel busk). I make my corsets with steel boning & steel busks for the durability & cinching power. I have to admit I'm not a fan of plastic.

If you ever need to shop around for corset supplies, I made myself a comparison chart for materials here. It's not comprehensive by any means, but it has links to some good resources (almost all are in the US though).

My first post! Yay.

A coupla things - as far as peircing goes, I recently had my helix peirced by Bear at Sacred Heart. I would HIGHLY recommend him, he made me and my friends who were also getting peircings very comfortable, he took his time and explained the process and the aftercare very clearly. He was obviously interested in our well being and making sure the experience was a good one.

A now a question - I am a newbie corsetmaker (I've made one, using brocade fabric and plastic canvas for boning). I'm making another, this time out of velvet, and I have bought boning this time from Textile Clearing House (Fraser at 41st - very cheap and lots of cool fabric). However, I am looking for a busk or some sort of material I could use to make one. Any suggestions? Does anyone know of a place that sells corsetmaking supplies in the Vancouver area? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Women's clothing still makes up the bulk of the inventory, but of all the places I checked out while I was on the mainland, New World had the largest selection. The men's stuff had mostly a PVC/Fetish slant to it, whereas the women's is both classic and modern. For classic stuff I was able to pick up two nice shirts at Venus and Mars in New West.

And thanks again to Valerian about the tip on the shoe store at Kingsgate mall. I picked up a decent pair of boots at a great price. I just have to resist the temptation to wear them everywhere.

In regards to New World Designs...

You might want to expand the description to include some men's wear, because I was in just before I left for the island, and they have expanded their selection to include some pretty nice things for guys. The designs include stuff by "lip-service", and Deadly Dichotomy Designs, the latter being produced by a local Vancouver lady.

If I'd had any money left after my post christmas shopping spree, I'd probably have picked something up. Oh well.
